Technical Services Flagship Project – Coming Soon!

The Municipality has completed the necessary application for funding and procurement of the contractor to complete the Upgrade of the Bulk Sewerage Treatment Works. The appointment has been completed for the amount of R 319 million. This is one of the Municipalities largest infrastructure projects, designed to expand the existing plant's capacity from 16 million litres to 28 million litres per day.

The Municipality completed Phase-1 in 2023, which was to restore the existing 16 Ml/day Wastewater Treatment Plant to full functionality. It included the refurbishment of the electro-mechanical equipment. Furthermore, a staffing facility and motor control centre (MCC).

Phase-2 is here!! The KWWTW plant currently serves more than 23 000 households, which is mostly Upington and the surrounding rural settlements. The Expansion works will include construction of a full 12 Ml/Day activated sludge train and sludge management facility. The capacity increase will further improve the quality of effluent disposed to the River and also the needed capacity to serve the growing economy.

The Municipality completed approximately 4500 household connections for water and sanitation services in various areas of Upington which have safely connected to the system and others in progress to connect to the sewer reticulation network. It is also anticipated that the spin offs from the project includes job creation and upcoming local based contractor’s development.

The municipality’s LED office will formalize the engagement platform for the contractors to reach specific goals for development. To see the planning, coordination and professional skills being applied to make the vision for an improved capacity and quality of Kameelmond Wastewater Treatment Works, fast becoming a reality is exciting; as it will all ultimately benefit our growing Municipality and the environment for years to come.
